Elizabeth swallowed all the words she wanted to say to Damien, all the avowals of love and unending passion. She knew she had to say the words that would drive him away, that would keep him safe.
Damien looked at her with his emotions evident in his face.
And even though she knew it would make them both miserable, she said the words.
"I don't love you Damien, I never did."
Elizabeth watched as something died in his eyes. Damien nodded and turned away from Elizabeth.
Elizabeth watched him go, knowing that it was best for the both of them. She watched him until he turned the corner and walked out of her life forever.
She allowed only a single tear to run down her face. Elizabeth wiped away the tear and turned to her equipment.
